What's really behind the stain?

Cracked and blown plaster on a damp wall

Rising damp

A tide-mark above the skirting, crumbling plaster and white salts on the wall. It's often mistaken for other damp, so we confirm it with a survey before treating anything.

Peeling render exposing brickwork

Penetrating damp

Patches that grow after rain, usually from leaking gutters, cracked render or failed pointing. We fix the source first, then dry and repair the wall.

A foil-lined roof window seen from inside a dark loft

Condensation and mould

The most common cause of damp in UK homes. Better ventilation and insulation usually solve it, not chemicals, and we'll tell you honestly if that's all you need.

Anatomy of a dry, warm wall.

  1. Sound masonryRepointed, rendered and sealed, so rain stays out before anything else is added.
  2. Breathable membraneStops wind and water getting in, while letting the wall breathe and dry out.
  3. InsulationThe layer that keeps heat in, cuts bills and keeps wall surfaces warm enough to stay dry.
  4. Finished plasterA smooth, dry surface ready for decorating, with no salts and no stains.

Things people ask.

Anything else, we're happy to talk it through before the survey.

Is it rising damp or condensation?

Condensation is far more common in UK homes, and treating the wrong problem wastes money. We take moisture readings and look at the building before recommending anything.

Could insulation make damp worse?

Done badly, yes. We check ventilation and the condition of the walls first, and use breathable materials where the building needs them.

Do I need permission for external wall insulation?

Building regulations apply, and planning permission may be needed if it changes the look of the property, especially in a conservation area. We'll advise you at the survey.
